Child Passenger Safety Week is here, and the Stewart Toyota team in Corsicana, TX, has all the information our customers in Ennis, Waxahachie, and surrounding areas need to keep their children safe on the road.
What is Child Passenger Safety Week?
Child Passenger Safety Week runs from September 20th through September 26th this year and aims to educate parents and caregivers on how to keep their children protected in their vehicle.
When you have a child, it’s important to know what type of car seat is best suited for them. We’re going to go through all of these together.
Looking for instructions on how to install your car seat? Find them here!
Rear-Facing Car Seats
If you have a young child, especially one under 1, always use a rear-facing seat. There are two types of these seats.
-
Infant-only seats
-
Convertible or all-in-one car seats — available for children at a larger height and weight for rear-facing seats
It is recommended to keep your children in a rear-facing seat for as long as you can. You don’t need to switch them to a new seat until they’ve reached the top height or weight limit by your car seat’s manufacturer.
Forward-Facing Car Seats
Once your child does reach that limit, you can move them into a forward-facing seat. This car seat includes a harness and tether, and is typically used for children ages 3 through 7. However, parents and caretakers should keep children in this seat until they’ve reached the top height or weight limit by their car seat’s manufacturer.
Booster Seats
The booster seat should be used once your child outgrows their forward-facing seat. The booster seat raises the child to where the lap-and-shoulder belt fits securely across their body. It should remain in the back seat, as it is safer there. Make sure your child’s seat belt is sitting snugly across their shoulders and chest.
Other useful resources on child passenger safety can be found here.
Once they graduate from the booster seat, they can begin wearing a seat belt, but it is recommended that they stay in the back seat to ensure maximum safety.
